New European Resuscitation Council Guidelines for Resuscitation

This is really hot off the press - only released on 29th November 2005
The main changes that have been made are as follows:

Adult Basic Life Support
1 CPR should be started if a victim is unresponsive and not breathing normally
2 Rescuers should place their hands on the centre of the chest rather than using the 'rib margin' method.
3 Each rescue breath is 1 second rather than 2.
4 The ratio of compressions to rescue breaths is 30:2 for adults and children
5 For adults the 2 initial rescue breaths are omitted.

Paediatric Basic Life Support
1 Start with 5 rescue breaths and continue with the 30:2 ratio as for Adult BLS
2 Two or more rescuers with a duty to respond (trained medical personnel) will use the 15:2 ratio in a child up to the onset of puberty.
3 In an infant (less than 1 year) the compression technique remains the same - 2 finger compression in the centre of the chest.
